At La Salle Green Hills, education is more than academics, it’s about shaping leaders who champion justice, creativity, and social responsibility. Among its proud alumni are two remarkable figures: Atty. Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno (LSGH 1978), a renowned human rights lawyer and educator, and his son Jose Lorenzo “Pepe” Diokno (LSGH 2005), an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. Their journeys reflect the transformative power of an education rooted in values and vision.

Where Advocacy Begins

For Atty. Chel, LSGH was the starting point of a lifelong mission to uphold justice. “Even in a safe environment like La Salle, we were never far apart from what was happening around us,” he recalls. This awareness, nurtured by the school’s commitment to social consciousness, shaped his path as a defender of human rights.

Growing up in a family deeply committed to justice, his father, Senator Jose W. Diokno, and grandfather, Supreme Court Associate Justice Ramon M. Diokno, Chel absorbed values of integrity and courage early on. A defining memory? His father planting a tree while imprisoned during martial law, a symbol of hope that inspired Chel’s resilience and dedication.

From Classroom to Cinema

Pepe Diokno’s story is equally compelling. Immersed in LSGH’s culture of excellence and social responsibility, he discovered the power of storytelling. Influential mentors like Ms. Fay Irasga and Ms. Ginny Natividad encouraged him to think critically and write boldly — skills that became the foundation of his award-winning films.

Pepe’s works, including his latest historical epic GomBurZa echo the lessons learned at LSGH: to be socially aware and culturally rooted. “When you have that love for who we are as Filipinos, then it’s from there that you start to be conscious about what’s happening now,” he shares.

Education That Inspires Action

Atty. Chel, now Founding Dean of the DLSU Tañada-Diokno School of Law, continues to mentor future advocates, while Pepe uses cinema to spark dialogue on pressing issues. Both embody the LSGH ethos, academic excellence paired with a deep sense of responsibility.

Their achievements prove that when education is grounded in values, it creates leaders who don’t just succeed, they make a difference.
