International human rights lawyer Atty. Michael Barney Almazar, an alumnus of LSGH – Batch 1998, and Techno-Businessman and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awardee Nico Jose Nolledo, also an alumnus of LSGH – Batch 1994, are two of the ten outstanding awardees of the 2015 The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM). The awards were given during a ceremony held at the Meralco Theater last January 27, 2016.



Atty Almazar has an MBA-Juris Doctorate degree from De La Salle University. He is also a graduate of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the University of London with a degree in International Business and European Union Law.

He is a Dubai-based lawyer who holds a UAE Legal Consultancy License, a lifetime member of the Philippine Bar, a director at the
Commercial Department of Gulf Law in the Middle East, Philippines and United Kingdom and founder of Filipino Lawyers in Dubai.

Barney Almazar’s involvement with the Filipino community in the Middle East started when he joined the law firm as a partner in 2012. “I realized that Filipinos needed a law firm dedicated for them,” he said. “I started my practice in Dubai as a corporate lawyer. Every time I meet my compatriots, they feel relieved knowing they can turn to me for help on UAE laws.”

Atty Almazar leads the free legal aid clinic at the Philippine Embassy and Consulate in Dubai, and is known as a defender of the rights of millions of migrant workers in the Middle East.


The 2015 TOYM Awards was inspired by the theme, “Building our Nation for Global Competitiveness.” Attry Almazar gave the acceptance speech on behalf of the other awardees. In his speech, he said that “we are a great people with a vibrant youth and democracy destined to take part in world affairs.”



Nico Jose “Nix” Nolledo was given the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurship of the Year Award last October 14, 2015. He is currently the President and Chairman of the Board of Xurpas, Inc., Southeast Asia’s largest listed consumer tech company. He is also the founding director and former president of the Internet & Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) as well as the founding director of the Digital Commerce Association of the Philippines (DCOM). Mr Nolledo will be representing the Philippines in the World Entrepreneur of the Year in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2016.

Nix Nolledo also received the Master Entrepreneur award for adhering to sound management practices in managing his companies. He co-founded Xurpas in 2001 with a capital of only P62,500. Today, Xurpas is a billion-peso company that develops mobile platform solutions and mission-critical applications for Philippine telephone companies, government agencies and large corporations, as well as content that caters to the local Filipino market.

He entered the consumer technology industry back in 1999 when he founded, a global online community used by Filipinos. He was also involved in several start-up technology companies such as, a social news network; Gurango Software, a multinational business software company; and, an online flower and gift delivery service.

A true “technopreneur,” Nix Nolledo is the Chairman of Fluxion and has investments in more than 55 technology businesses.


The Entrepreneur of the Year was founded in the United States by professional services firm Ernst & Young in 1986 to recognize the achievements of the most successful and innovative entrepreneurs worldwide. In 2001, Ernst & Young expanded the program and launched the World Entrepreneur of the Year awards. In the Philippines, the SGV Foundation, Inc. established the Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.
