Meet Master Rafael Varela, Youth Judge For the 4th National Children’s Book Awards
LSGH Grade 6 student, Master Rafael Varela, was chosen as one of the young judges during the 4th National Children’s Book Awards. The organizers of the award, the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), made this year’s awards a unique one by inviting young judges to join the usual team of adult judges. These young judges shared their own thoughts by writing about their personal reflections on the books they have read and judged. Rafael wrote citations for the two book finalists, Big Sister, written by Zarah Gagatiga, and Si Andoy, Batang Tondo written by Mark Anthony Angeles. The 4th National Children’s Book Awards was participated in by children and young adults whose books were published in 2014 and 2015.
The recognition that Rafael received from the organizers is a testament to the reading and writing skills of LSGH students, and to their excellent reasoned judgment or analysis in any tasks they do.
The Awards highlighted the celebration of National Children’s Book Day last July 2016 which commemorated the anniversary of Dr Jose Rizal’s publication, “The Monkey and the Turtle”, in Trubner’s Oriental Record in London. The National Children’s Book Day event aims to promote the importance of children’s literature and instill in children the love for reading.
Our message to Rafael: Keep up the good work! May you continue to nurture your love for reading. May you serve as an inspiration to your fellow Lasallians who aspire to become famous writers and literary critics someday. Animo La Salle!
